From world-famous destinations to underrated gems, here are the top US ski resorts for winter 2026.
The US has some of the best skiing in the world, from the legendary powder of Utah to the challenging terrain of Colorado and California. Here is a breakdown of the top resorts and what each one does best.
Vail is the biggest ski resort in the US and arguably the most iconic. The Back Bowls — seven bowls of open terrain totaling over 2,700 acres — are legendary. The village is well-developed with excellent dining, lodging, and apres-ski. It is expensive at every level, from lift tickets to lodging to food. But the sheer scale and variety of terrain makes it worth the splurge at least once. Best snow conditions typically mid-January through February.
Park City Mountain is the largest ski resort in the US by acreage and has one enormous advantage over Colorado resorts: Salt Lake City is 30 minutes away, making it the easiest major resort to fly into. Utah's "Greatest Snow on Earth" branding is not marketing — the light, dry powder is genuinely exceptional. The town of Park City itself has character, with a historic main street and solid dining. Connected via gondola to Canyons Village for even more terrain.
Jackson Hole has a 4,139-foot vertical drop — the most in the US — and terrain that serious skiers regard as the best in North America. Corbets Couloir is one of the most famous expert runs on the continent. The town of Jackson has genuine western character and good food. This is not a resort for beginners; the mountain is steep and the expert terrain is extensive. January and February offer the best conditions.
Mammoth has a longer season than any resort on this list — sometimes skiing into June or July in big snow years. The altitude (11,053 feet at the summit) and Sierra Nevada snowpack make for excellent conditions. It is a drive from Los Angeles and easy to access from the Bay Area. February through April are often the best months for conditions and lower prices than peak December-January.
Aspen is four mountains in one destination — Aspen Mountain, Aspen Highlands, Buttermilk, and Snowmass — accessed with one lift ticket. The town of Aspen is among the most glamorous ski towns in the world. It is the most expensive resort on this list by a significant margin. But the combination of terrain variety, the town itself, and the prestige make it a bucket-list destination for many skiers.
Not every ski trip needs to be a Vail-level splurge. These resorts offer excellent terrain at lower price points:
