Winter Travel Packing List: Cold and Warm Destinations

Whether you are skiing in Colorado or lounging on a Caribbean beach, here is exactly what to pack for your winter trip.

Winter travel packs differently depending on where you are going. A ski trip to Colorado and a beach week in Aruba require almost completely opposite wardrobes. This guide covers both, plus the universal items every winter traveler needs regardless of destination.

Ski-Specific Gear Notes

Ski boots and skis are almost always better rented at the resort rather than packed. Modern resort rentals are excellent quality, and checking ski equipment as airline baggage costs $50 to $100 each way and creates real hassle. Rent everything except your own helmet and goggles, which are personal fit items worth owning if you ski more than once a year.

Pack your ski clothes in your carry-on if possible. Lost luggage on a ski trip is particularly painful when your base layers are in the missing bag and your first ski day is tomorrow.

Beach Trip Packing Tips

Beach destinations require far less clothing than cold destinations. The mistake most first-time beach travelers make is overpacking. Three or four days of light, quick-dry clothing is enough for a week — rinse swimsuits in the sink each night, and they dry by morning in a warm climate.

Do not pack towels. Every resort and hotel provides them, and beach towels are heavy and bulky. Pack reef-safe sunscreen from home — resort shops charge two to three times normal prices, and some Caribbean islands restrict or ban chemical sunscreens.

For ski trips: the base layer system (thermal underwear, mid-layer fleece, waterproof outer shell) outperforms any single "heavy winter coat" for warmth, versatility, and packability. Three thin layers trap more heat than one thick one.
